Boxes of magnesium citrate effervescent powder contain 10 sachets of 5 gm each.
Magnesium ions prevent the formation of calcium oxalate crystals by combining with exogenous feed oxalate and thus preventing renal crystal formation. Citrate ions make the urine alkaline so that the urine dissolves and can be eliminated easily. Also, citrate ions, inhibit the formation of calcium oxalate. Therefore, magnesium citrate may be prescribed to prevent recurrence of calcium oxalate kidney stones. It is prescribed for:
- Cases of axaluria.
- A mild laxative to relieve constipation.
How to take magnesium citrate:
- The contents of one sachet should be dissolved in half a cup of water and given 3 times daily or as directed by the doctor.
Do not take magnesium citrate:
- In case of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms of appendicitis.
- In the case of abdominal surgery.
- In the event of intestinal obstruction or perforation.
- In case of cracks in the rectum.
