Depakine belongs to a family of medicines called antiepileptics.
Uses of Depakine:
- This medication is used to treat different types of seizures in adults and children.
- It is also used in children to prevent seizures associated with fever.
Instructions for use:
- Depakine treatment should be initiated and supervised by a doctor who specializes in the treatment of epilepsy.
- This treatment should not be prescribed to female children, adolescent girls or women who are able to bear a child unless other treatments are ineffective or cannot be tolerated.
- If no other treatment is possible, you will be prescribed valproate and dispensed under very strict conditions (contained in the contraceptive programme).
- The specialist should re-evaluate the need for treatment at least once a year.
- Always adhere to the dosage prescribed by your doctor. If you are unsure about anything, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage:
- Your daily dose will be determined for you and checked by your doctor.
- Your doctor should prescribe the dose in milligrams (mg) and not milliliters (ml).
- This information is important because the syringe used to draw the correct dose from the bottle is graduated in milligrams (mg).
- If your prescription is written in milliliters (mL), contact your doctor or pharmacist.
- The dose is generally divided into:
- Two doses per day for children under one year of age.
- 3 doses daily for adults and children over 1 year of age.
- It is preferable to take the dose during meals.
Warnings and precautions:
- This medication can, in very rare cases, cause liver damage (hepatitis) or pancreas damage (pancreatitis), which can be serious and life-threatening.
- Your doctor will prescribe blood tests to monitor your liver function regularly, especially during the first six months of treatment.
Possible side effects:
Tell your doctor right away if any of the following signs appear:
- Sudden fatigue, loss of appetite, fatigue, drowsiness, swelling in the legs.
- Repeated vomiting, nausea, stomach and intestinal pain, and yellowing of the skin or eyes.
- Repeated epileptic seizures even though you are taking your medication correctly.
