Rosuvastatin is used to correct levels of fatty substances in the blood called lipids, the most famous of which is cholesterol.
There are different types of cholesterol in the blood – “bad” cholesterol and “good” cholesterol.
Rosuvastatin can reduce "bad" cholesterol and increase "good" cholesterol.
It works by helping to prevent the body from producing “bad” cholesterol.
Do not take rosuvastatin:
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to rosuvastatin, or any of its ingredients.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you have liver disease.
If you have serious kidney problems.
If you experience recurring or unexplained muscle aches or pains.
If you are taking sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/vocilaprevir combination.
If you are taking a medicine called cyclosporine (used for example after an organ transplant).
Warnings and precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking rosuvastatin:
If you suffer from kidney problems.
If you have liver problems.
If you experience recurring or unexplained muscle aches or pains, have a personal or family history of muscle problems, or a previous history of muscle problems when taking other cholesterol-lowering medications.
If you regularly drink large amounts of alcohol.
If your thyroid gland is not working properly.
If you take other medicines called fibrates to lower your cholesterol.
If you are taking medications to treat HIV infection.
If you are taking or have taken in the past seven days a medicine called fusidic acid.
If you are over 70 years old.
If you have severe respiratory insufficiency.
If you are of Asian descent - i.e. Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Indian.
Possible side effects of Rosuvastatin:
They include headache, stomach pain, constipation, feeling nauseous, muscle pain, feeling weak, dizziness, diabetes, rash, itching or other skin reactions, and increased amount of protein in the body. Urine – this usually returns to normal on its own without having to stop taking rosuvastatin tablets.
Other medicines and rosuvastatin:
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications:
Cyclosporine (used, for example, after an organ transplant),
warfarin or clopidogrel (or any other medicine used to thin the blood),
Fibrates (such as gemfibrozil, fenofibrate) or any other medication used to lower cholesterol (such as ezetimibe),
indigestion remedies (used to neutralize acids in your stomach),
Erythromycin (antibiotic), fusidic acid (antibiotic)
Oral contraceptives (birth control pills),
regorafenib (used to treat cancer),
Darolotamide (used to treat cancer),
hormone replacement therapy,

How to take rosuvastatin:
Usual doses in adults
If you are taking rosuvastatin for high cholesterol:
Starting dose
Your treatment with rosuvastatin should start at a dose of 5 mg or 10 mg, even if you have taken a higher dose of a different statin before. The choice of starting dose depends on:
Your cholesterol levels.
Your risk level of having a heart attack or stroke.
Whether you have a factor that may make you more sensitive to potential side effects.
Your doctor may decide to give you the lowest dose (5 mg) if:
Be of Asian descent (Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean and Indian).
You are over 70 years old.
You have moderate kidney problems.
You are at risk of developing muscle pain (myopathy).
Increase the dose and the maximum daily dose
Your doctor may decide to increase your dose. This is so that you take the right amount of rosuvastatin for you.
If you start with a dose of 5 mg, your doctor may decide to double this dose to 10 mg, then 20 mg and then 40 mg if necessary.
If you start with 10 mg, your doctor may decide to double this to 20 mg and then 40 mg if necessary.
The maximum daily dose of rosuvastatin is 40 mg.
If you are taking rosuvastatin to reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, or related health problems:
The recommended dose is 20 mg daily. However, your doctor may decide to use a lower dose if you have any of the above factors.
Children and adolescents aged 6-17 years
The dosage in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years is 5 to 20 mg once daily.
The usual starting dose is 5 mg per day, and your doctor may gradually increase your dose to find the right amount of rosuvastatin.
The maximum daily dose of rosuvastatin is 10 or 20 mg for children ages 6 to 17 years depending on your underlying condition being treated. Take your dose once a day.
How to store rosuvastatin:
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date shown on the package.
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25 degrees Celsius.
