Lustral 50 mg 30 tablets:

• Sertraline is one of a group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
• These medications are used to treat depression and/or anxiety disorders.

How Lustral works:

• The mechanism of action of sertraline is related to the inhibition of serotonin (5HT) uptake by neurons in the central nervous system.
• It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.

Lustral can be used to treat:

• Depression and prevention of recurrence of depression (in adults).
• Social anxiety disorder (in adults).
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults.
• Panic disorder (in adults).
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults, children, and adolescents ages 6 to 17 years.

Do not use Lustral :

• If you are allergic to sertraline or any of the other ingredients of this medication.
• If you are taking or have taken medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs such as selegiline and moclobemide) or monoamine oxidase-like medicines (such as linezolid).
• If you stop treatment with sertraline, you should wait at least one week before starting treatment with sertraline.
• After stopping treatment with an MAOI, you must wait at least two weeks before you can start treatment with an MAOI.
• If you are taking another medicine called pimozide.

How to use Lustral:

• Take this medication orally.
• Swallow the medication whole with water. Do not chew it.
• Take the medicine before food or with food.
• If you feel that the effect of the medicine is too weak or too strong, do not change the dose yourself, but ask your doctor.
• It may take up to two weeks for results to appear.
• The amount of medicine you take will depend on the severity of your illness. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
• Doses may be changed in special circumstances, so always follow your doctor or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more medicine than you should, talk to your doctor or go to hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose.
• Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for a missed dose.

Warnings and precautions:

Medications are not always right for everyone.
Tell your doctor before taking sertraline if you have or have suffered in the past from any of the following conditions:

• If you have epilepsy (seizure) or a history of seizures.
• If you suffer from manic-depressive illness (bipolar disorder) or schizophrenia. If you are suffering from a manic episode.
• If you have ever had or have ever thought about harming or killing yourself.
• If you suffer from serotonin syndrome.
• If you have a low level of sodium in your blood. You should also tell your doctor if you take certain medications for high blood pressure, because these medications may also change the level of sodium in your blood.
• If you are elderly, you may be more at risk of low blood sodium levels
• If you have liver disease.
• If you suffer from diabetes. Blood glucose levels may change.
• If you have a bleeding disorder or are taking medications that thin the blood (such as acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) or warfarin) or may increase your risk of bleeding.
• If you are a child or teenager under 18 years of age.
• If you are undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
• If you have eye problems, such as certain types of glaucoma.
• If you have been told that you have an abnormality in the tracking of your heart after an electrocardiogram (ECG) known as a prolonged QT interval.
• If you have heart disease, low potassium levels or low magnesium levels, a family history of QT prolongation, low heart rate, and concomitant use of QT prolonging medications.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby.

Possible side effects:

Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention:

• If you feel tightness in your throat or swelling in your eyes, face, lips or tongue.
• If you feel faint or have difficulty breathing.
• If you get hives or itching on your face or body.

Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may report:

• Cold, sore throat and runny nose.
• Lack of appetite or increased appetite.
• Anxiety and depression.
• Decreased sexual interest.
• Irregular menstrual cycle, erectile dysfunction.
• Nervousness.
• Nightmares.
• Shaking and muscle movement problems (such as muscle tension, difficulty walking, stiffness, spasms, and involuntary muscle movements).
• Numbness and tingling, muscle tension, lack of attention.
• Abnormal taste (taste problems).
• Visual disturbances.
• Ringing in the ears.
• Palpitations (increased heartbeat).
• Constipation, abdominal pain, vomiting and gas.
• Increased sweating.
• Back pain, joint pain and muscle pain.
• Malaise, chest pain, weakness, fever.
• overweight.
