Dextrose 5% in saline solution 500 ml (Al-Razi):
Dextrose and sodium chloride injection are used as a source of water, electrolytes, and calories.
Do not use solutions containing dextrose in patients with a known allergy to corn or corn products.
Warnings and precautions:
- It should be used with extreme caution, in patients with congestive heart failure, severe renal failure, and in clinical cases in which edema with sodium retention is present.
- Dextrose injection with low electrolyte concentrations should not be given simultaneously with blood through the same administration set due to the possibility of pseudoagglutination or hemolysis.
- Intravenous administration of dextrose and sodium chloride can cause fluid and/or solute overload resulting in diluted serum electrolyte concentrations, fluid overload, congestive states, or pulmonary edema.
- Excessive administration of dextrose and sodium chloride injection may cause significant hypokalemia.
- In patients with impaired renal function, administration of dextrose and sodium chloride injection may result in sodium retention.
- Clinical evaluation and periodic laboratory determinations are necessary to monitor changes in fluid balance and acid-base balance during prolonged parenteral therapy or when the patient's condition requires such evaluation.
- Caution should be exercised when administering dextrose and sodium chloride injection, to patients receiving corticosteroids or corticotropin.
- Dextrose and sodium chloride injection should be used with caution in patients with overt or subclinical diabetes mellitus.
Possible side effects:
- Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if you experience tightness in the throat, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue, feel faint, or have difficulty breathing.
- Stop using the product if you experience hives or itching of the face or body.
- Other medications and dextrose and sodium chloride injections.
- Additives may be incompatible.
- Consult with pharmacist, if available.
- When introducing additives, use aseptic technique, mix well and do not store.
