It is an intrauterine device made of polyethylene and wound with a copper wire with a silver core. The surface area of copper is 380 mm2. The polyethylene body, modified T-shaped, is impregnated with barium sulfate.
Copper IUDs prevent pregnancy by preventing fertilization.
Do not use it in cases of:
- Known or suspected pregnancy.
- Current or recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Lower genital tract infection.
- Endometriosis after birth.
- Affected miscarriage within the last three months.
- Untreated cervicitis.
- Untreated cervical dysplasia.
- Untreated malignant tumor of the uterus or cervix.
- Undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding.
- Congenital or acquired uterine anomalies, including fibroids if they distort the uterine cavity.
- Copper allergy.
- Wilson's disease.
- Coagulation disorders.
- Conditions associated with increased susceptibility to infection.
Warnings and precautions:
- It may increase menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea. It may not be the first choice for women with excessive menstrual bleeding, anemia, and dysmenorrhea, or for women receiving anticoagulants. If these conditions develop during use, removal of the device should be considered.
- It may be used with caution in women with congenital heart disease or valvular heart disease who are at risk of developing infectious endocarditis. Antibiotic prophylaxis should be given to these patients when inserting or removing the intrauterine device.
- Not the preferred method for young Lagrafydd women. In this group, pregnancy rates and clearance rates for expulsion, bleeding and/or pain, and for infection were reported to be higher than in other users.
Possible side effects:
