Always use this medication exactly as your doctor has told you to.
Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults and the elderly:
Ulcerative colitis:
The usual dose is 1600-2400 mg once a day or divided into 2-3 doses daily.
In case of exacerbation, the dose can be increased to 4800 mg divided into 2-3 doses.
Crohn's disease:
Maintenance therapeutic dose:
1600-2400 mg daily divided into 2-3 doses. In case of exacerbation, the dose can be increased to 4800 mg divided into 2-3 doses.
Use of Asacol in children:
There is only limited documentation of the effect on children (ages 6-18 years).
Children aged 6 years or older
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease:
Active disease:
The starting dose is determined individually, and is 30-50 mg / kg / day in divided doses. Maximum dose: 75 mg/kg/day in divided doses.
The total dose should not exceed 4 g/day.
Maintenance therapeutic dose:
The starting dose is determined individually, and is 15-30 mg / kg / day in divided doses. The total dose should not exceed 2 g/day.
It is usually recommended that half the adult dose be given to children with a body weight of up to 40 kg and the normal adult dose to those over 40 kg.
Always follow your doctor's dosage instructions.
Swallow the enteric tablets whole.
It should not be chewed, crushed, or cut into pieces before swallowing.
If you think that the effect of Asacol is too strong or too weak, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist about this.
If you take too much Asacol:
Call a doctor, hospital, or poison information center if you take too much medicine or if a child accidentally takes the medicine.
For other questions about your medication, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to take Asacol:
You should not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
If one or more doses are missed, the next dose should be taken at the usual time.
Warnings and precautions:
Do not use Asacol:
If you are allergic to mesalazine or any of the other ingredients of this medication.
You have a medical history of allergy to salicylates.
You have severely impaired liver function.
You have severely impaired kidney function.
Talk to your doctor before taking Asacol if you have a medical condition or disease, this is especially true of:
If you suffer from kidney failure. This is especially important if you are older. When you start taking Asacol, your doctor may do regular blood tests to make sure your kidneys are working properly.
If you suffer from liver disease (high levels of liver enzymes).
If you have had an allergic reaction to the heart such as inflammation of the heart muscle (inflammation of the heart muscle) or inflammation of the pericardium (inflammation of the pericardium).
If you have previously had allergic heart reactions due to mesalazine, you should not start treatment with Asacol again.
Caution should be exercised in patients who have previously had an allergic cardiac reaction regardless of the cause.
If you suffer from lung disease, for example. Asthma, your doctor may want to check your breathing from time to time.
If you have ever had side effects of sulfasalazine or another medicine used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
If necessary, your doctor will perform blood tests before and during treatment with Asacol to check that blood values (eg cell counts in the blood) are normal.
