Studies and research
Epidemiological studies have suggested an association between the use of combined oral contraceptives and an increased risk of arterial disease, thrombotic disease, and venous thromboembolism such as myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and cerebrovascular accident. These events occur rarely, and the risk of VTE is highest during the first year of life. the use . This increased risk is present after initiation of use. The study indicates that this increased risk is present mainly during the first 3 months of use. Generally, the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) at higher doses of estrogen has been reported. Thrombosis in other blood vessels, such as the liver, has also been reported. mesenteric, renal, cerebral or retinal veins and arteries
