Singulair Pediatric 4 mg Chewable Tablets, 28 Tablets:

  • MNtelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks a group of substances called leukotriene.

How does montelukast work:

  • Leukotrienes cause narrowing and swelling of the airways in the lungs.
  • By blocking leukotrienes, montelukast improves asthma symptoms and helps control asthma.
  • Your doctor has prescribed Montelukast to treat your child's asthma and prevent asthma symptoms during the day and at night.
  • Montelukast is used to treat asthma in patients ages 2 to 5 years who are not adequately controlled by their medications and need additional treatment.
  • Montelukast may also be a therapeutic alternative to inhaled steroids for patients 2 to 5 years of age who have not recently taken corticosteroid tablets for asthma and who cannot use inhaled steroids.
  • Montelukast also prevents exercise-induced narrowing of the airways in patients ages 2 years and older.
  • Your doctor will decide how to use montelukast depending on the symptoms and severity of your child's asthma.

Instructions for use:

  • Make sure your child always uses this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to.
  • Contact your child's doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • This medicine should be given to children under adult supervision.
  • For children who have difficulty taking chewable tablets, oral granules are available.
  • Your child should take only one chewable tablet of Montelukast per day as directed by the doctor.
  • They should be taken even if your child has no symptoms or has a severe asthma attack.

For children from 2 to 5 years:

  • The recommended dose is one 4 mg chewable tablet daily, taken in the evening.
  • If your child is taking montelukast, you should make sure he or she is not taking other medicines containing the same active ingredient as montelukast.
  • This medication should be taken orally.
  • The tablets should be chewed before swallowing.
  • Montelukast 4 mg tablets should not be taken with food. It should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after food.

Warnings and precautions:

  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before your child uses montelukast.
  • If your child's asthma or wheezing worsens, call the doctor immediately.
  • Montelukast tablets are not intended to treat severe asthma attacks.
  • If a seizure occurs, follow the instructions your child's doctor gave you.
  • Always have your child's emergency medications on hand.
  • It is important that your child takes asthma medication as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Montelukast should not be used in place of other asthma medications your doctor has prescribed for your child.
  • If your child is taking asthma medications, know that if he or she develops a combination of symptoms including a flu-like sensation, tingling or numbness in the arms and legs, worsening lung symptoms, and/or a rash, call the doctor.
  • Your child should not take acetylsalicylic acid or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (also known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs) if it worsens their asthma.
  • Patients should be aware that numerous neuropsychiatric side effects (eg, behavioral and mood changes) have been reported in adults, adolescents, and children taking montelukast.
