Riyavan syrup 100 ml:

• It is a medication used to help relieve a dry, irritating cough.
• The liquid contains dextromethorphan hydrobromide which is an antitussive to help stop persistent coughing.

How dextromethorphan works:

• Dextromethorphan exhibits antitussive activity and is devoid of sedative effect or addictive property.
• This drug crosses the blood-brain barrier and activates sigma opioid receptors in the cough center of the central nervous system, thus suppressing cough.

Do not use dextromethorphan:

• If you have ever had a bad reaction to dextromethorphan or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
• If you suffer from lung disease.
• If you are taking, or have taken in the past two weeks, medicines for depression known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
• If you are taking a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (used to treat depression and anxiety such as fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline).
• For children under 12 years old.

Warnings and precautions:

• If you suffer from liver problems.
• If you have chronic bronchitis, emphysema or asthma or have had a cough for a few weeks or a cough with a lot of mucus (phlegm).
• If you are taking any other cough and cold medicines.
• If your child is prone to developing certain allergic reactions (such as atopic reactions).
• If you are addicted or have ever been addicted to opioids, alcohol, prescription medications or illegal drugs.
• If you have previously experienced withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, shakiness or sweating, when you stop taking alcohol or drugs.
• If your doctor has told you that you are a slow metabolizer of CYP2D6.
• If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Possible side effects :

• Tightness in the throat, swelling of the eyes, face, lips or tongue, or you feel faint or have difficulty breathing.
• Hives or itching of the face or body.

If you are taking any other medicines, including:

• Certain medications to treat depression such as norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRI), which include bupropion.
• Antipsychotics (medicines used to treat mood disorders such as haloperidol, thioridazine, perphenazine).
• Antiarrhythmic agents (medicines used to treat irregular heartbeats such as amiodarone, propafenone, quinidine and flecainide).
• Calcimimetic agents (medicines used in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism, high parathyroid hormone levels such as cinacalcet).
• Antifungal (terbinafine).
• Opiate analgesics.
