Ampicillin is an antibiotic from the penicillin group that works by blocking the enzyme transpeptidase, which is responsible for building the bacterial wall, leading to its degradation.
Uses of Epicocillin:
Ampicillin is used in the treatment of a variety of diseases due to susceptible organisms. They include:.
- Biliary tract infections.
- Bronchitis and endocarditis.
- Gastroenteritis (including salmonella, enteritis and shigellosis).
- Gonorrhea and listeriosis.

Meningitis , Peritonitis and pneumonia.
- Septicemia, typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever.
- Urinary tract infections.
How ampicillin injection is given:
- Ampicillin is injected into a muscle or into a vein.
- Do not self-inject ampicillin if you do not understand how to give the injection and properly dispose of used needles, intravenous tubing, and other items used to inject the medication.
- You may need to mix ampicillin with a liquid (diluent) before using it. If you are using the injection at home, make sure you understand how to mix and store the medication properly. You should use the injection as soon as possible after mixing it.
- Use a puncture-resistant "sharps" disposal container (ask your pharmacist where to get one and how to dispose of it). Keep this container out of reach of children.
Do not take Epicocillin if you suffer from:
Known hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins.
Warnings and precautions:
To make sure ampicillin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- Allergy to any foods or medications.
- Allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics, such as cefdinir (Omnicef), cefprozil (Cefzil), cefuroxime (Ceftin), cephalexin (Keflex), and others.
- If you also take a medicine called allopurinol.
- This medication is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
- Ampicillin can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal contraceptives to prevent pregnancy.
- Ampicillin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction:
- Difficulty breathing Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Ampicillin may cause serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you have:
- Severe stomach pain.
- Watery or bloody diarrhea.
- Fever.
- Swollen glands.
- rash.
- Arthritis.
- A general feeling of illness and unusual weakness .
- Pale skin.
- Easy bruising or bleeding. Anemia.
- Hemolytic anemia.
- Decrease in the number of white blood cells.
- Aspartate aminotransferase increased.
- Interstitial nephritis.
Common side effects of ampicillin may include:
- Nausea, vomiting and stomach pain.
- Itching or rash.
- Swollen or black tongue.
- Vaginal itching or discharge.
Pharmacological interventions and epicocillin:
If you are taking any of the following medicines, tell your doctor or pharmacist, as you may need to adjust the dose or undergo certain tests:
- Probenecid
- Chloramphenicol or tetracycline.
- Allopurinol.
- Warfarin.
