It is an effective drug in the nitroimidazole class used to treat bacterial infections in the stomach and intestines.
Metronidazole is used to treat bacterial infections in the vagina, stomach, liver, skin, joints, brain, spinal cord, lungs, heart, or bloodstream.
Metronidazole is also used to treat trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite.
Usually, both sexual partners are treated at the same time, even if one shows no symptoms.
Do not use metronidazole to treat any condition that has not been examined by your doctor.
Take metronidazole exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction leaflets.
Metronidazole is taken orally.
It is administered by intravenous injection.
Your healthcare provider will give you the injection if you are unable to take the medication orally.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid).
Measure the dose with the provided measuring device (not a kitchen spoon).
Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.
If you are treating a vaginal infection, your sexual partner may also need to take metronidazole to prevent reinfection.
Metronidazole is usually given for up to 10 consecutive days.
You may need to repeat this dose after several weeks.
Continue using this medication even if symptoms improve quickly.
The dose of this medication varies among patients.
Follow your doctor's instructions or the directions on the label.
