How atorvastatin works:

• Atorvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication that belongs to the cholesterol-lowering "statin" class. Statins lower blood cholesterol levels by blocking 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMG-CoA), an enzyme necessary for cholesterol production in the liver.
• Low cholesterol concentration in the liver stimulates an increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors, which increases the liver's uptake of LDL and reduces the level of LDL in the blood.

Uses of Astatin 10 mg tablets:

• It is used to lower fats known as cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood when a low-fat diet and lifestyle changes fail to achieve the desired results.
• Cholesterol is a natural substance in the body that is necessary for normal growth. However, if there is too much cholesterol in the blood, it can build up on the walls of blood vessels, increasing the risk of blood clots and heart disease. High cholesterol is one of the most common causes of heart disease.
• If you are at increased risk of heart disease, it may also be used to reduce this risk even if your cholesterol levels are normal.
• You should maintain a suitable cholesterol-lowering diet during treatment.

How to use Astatin 10 mg tablets:

• The usual starting dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg once a day for adults and children 10 years of age or older.
• The dose may be increased if necessary by your doctor to reach the desired goal.
• Atorvastatin tablets should be swallowed whole with water, with or without food.
• Atorvastatin tablets can be taken at any time of the day, but the most common instruction is to take statins at night, as cholesterol production is thought to be higher at night.

• If you take more medicine than you should, talk to your doctor or go to hospital straight away.

• If you are a woman who is capable of having children and is not using contraception.
• If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
• If you are breastfeeding.
• If you are using the combination of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir to treat hepatitis C.

Warnings and precautions:

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking atorvastatin:

• If you suffer from severe respiratory failure.
• If you are taking or have taken in the past seven days a medicine called fusidic acid (medicine for bacterial infections) by mouth or by injection. The combination of fusidic acid and atorvastatin can cause serious muscle problems.
• If you have had a previous stroke with bleeding in the brain, or have small pockets of fluid in the brain from previous strokes.
• If you have kidney problems.
• If you suffer from an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).
• If you experience recurring or unexplained muscle aches or pains.
• If you have a personal or family history of muscle problems.
• If you have previously had muscle problems during treatment with other lipid-lowering medicines (for example, other statins or fibrates).
• If you have a history of liver disease.
• If you are over 70 years old.
