What is Cefixime and what are its uses:

Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic taken by mouth, characterized by bactericidal activity in the laboratory against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms.

It is used to treat the following acute infections when caused by sensitive microorganisms:

Upper respiratory tract infections: for example, middle ear infection where the causative organism is known or suspected to be resistant to commonly used antibiotics, or where treatment failure may involve significant risks.

Lower respiratory tract infections: for example, bronchitis.

Urinary tract infections such as: cystitis, urethritis and cystitis, uncomplicated pyelonephritis.

Do not use Cefixime:

If you are allergic to the active substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, or to any other cephalosporin or penicillin medicines.

How to use Cefixime:

Cefixime is taken orally.

The usual course of treatment is 7 days. This may continue for up to 14 days if necessary.

Doses:

Adults and children over 10 years or weighing more than 50 kg:

The recommended adult dose is 200-400 mg daily depending on the severity of the infection, given either as a single dose or divided into two doses.

Elderly:

Elderly patients can be given the same recommended dose as adults.

Kidney function should be assessed and the dose adjusted in cases of severe kidney failure.

Children under 10 years:

Cefixime 200 mg tablets are not recommended for children under 10 years old.

The safety and effectiveness of Cefixime in children under 6 months have not been established.
