What is Amlodipine/Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide used for?

Amlodipine/Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure in adult patients whose blood pressure is already controlled while taking amlodipine, valsartan, and hydrochlorothiazide and who may benefit from taking a single tablet containing all three substances.

How to take Amlodipine/Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide:

  • Always take this medication exactly as your doctor has told you to. Consult your doctor if you are not sure. This will help you get the best results and reduce the risk of side effects.
  • The usual dose of amlodipine/valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide is one tablet per day.
  • It is best to take the treatment at the same time every day. Morning is the best time.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  • You may take amlodipine/valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide with or without food. Do not take amlodipine/valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide with grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
  • Depending on how you respond to treatment, your doctor may suggest a higher or lower dose.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Do not take amlodipine/valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide:

  • If you are more than 3 months pregnant.
  • If you are allergic to amlodipine, any other calcium channel blockers, valsartan, hydrochlorothiazide, sulfonamide-derived medications (drugs used to treat chest or urinary tract infections), or any of the other ingredients of this drug. If you think you may be allergic, do not take amlodipine/valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide and talk to your doctor.
  • If you have liver disease, destruction of the small bile ducts within the liver (biliary cirrhosis) leads to the accumulation of bile in the liver (cholestasis).
  • If you have serious kidney problems or if you are undergoing dialysis.
  • If you are unable to produce urine (anuria).
  • If your blood potassium or sodium level is very low despite treatment to increase your blood potassium or sodium levels.
  • If your blood calcium level is very high despite treatment to lower your blood calcium levels.
  • If you suffer from gout (uric acid crystals in the joints).
  • If you suffer from severe low blood pressure (hypotension).
  •  If you have aortic valve stenosis or cardiogenic shock.
  • If you have heart failure after a heart attack.
  • If you suffer from diabetes or kidney dysfunction.

Warnings and precautions:

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking amlodipine/valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide
  • If you suffer from kidney problems.
  • If you have liver problems.
  • If you suffer from heart failure or coronary artery disease 
  • If you have had a heart attack
  • If you suffer from a disease called systemic lupus erythematosus (also called "lupus" or "SLE").
  • If you have diabetes (high blood sugar).
  • If you have high levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in your blood.

Possible side effects:

Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects after taking this medicine:
  • vertigo.
  • Low blood pressure: feeling faint, dizziness, and sudden loss of consciousness.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Your doctor may need to change your dose and/or take other precautions. In some cases, you may have to stop using a medication. This is especially important if you are using any of the medicines listed below:

 : Do not take the medication with
  • Lithium (a medicine used to treat some types of depression).
  • Medicines or substances that increase the amount of potassium in the blood. They include potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, potassium-sparing medications, and heparin.
  •  Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or aliskiren.
