Formit XR 500 mg 60 Tablets:

• The active ingredient in this medicine is called metformin.
• Metformin XR extended-release tablets are oral hyperglycemic medications used in the management of type 2 diabetes.
• It controls blood sugar (glucose) and helps your body use insulin effectively.
• This medication is often combined with changes in diet and exercise.

How metformin works:

• Metformin reduces blood glucose levels by decreasing glucose production in the liver.
• Metformin reduces intestinal absorption of glucose.
• Metformin increases insulin sensitivity resulting in increased glucose uptake and utilization.

Warnings and precautions:

• If you are allergic to metformin hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medication
• If you have liver problems
• If you suffer from severe kidney failure
• If you have uncontrolled diabetes, for example, severe hyperglycemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss...
• If you have a severe infection, such as one that affects your lungs, bronchial tubes, or your kidneys
• If you are being treated for severe heart failure or have recently had a heart attack, have serious circulation problems or have breathing difficulties
• If you take metformin hydrochloride with other medicines to treat diabetes, it may cause hypoglycemia.
• If you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia such as weakness, dizziness, increased sweating, rapid heartbeat, vision disturbances or difficulty concentrating, eating or drinking something containing sugar will usually help.

Side effects of Formit:

• Gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite may occur, especially at the beginning of treatment. These symptoms are generally transient and can be reduced by taking the tablets with meals. But if symptoms persist, the patient should stop taking the treatment and consult a doctor.
• Disorder in the sense of taste
• High blood acidity is a very serious complication that leads to vomiting, abdominal pain with muscle cramps and/or a general feeling of malaise with extreme fatigue and which requires special treatment.
• Skin reactions such as skin redness, itching
• Low levels of vitamin B12 (should be considered if the patient suffers from anemia)
• Liver dysfunction or hepatitis that resolves when the drug is discontinued

Other medicines and metformin hydrochloride:

• Tell your doctor if you are using, have recently used, or might use any other medicines.
• Medicines that increase urine production (diuretics).
• Medicines used to treat pain and inflammation (NSAIDs).
• Certain medications to treat high blood pressure.
• Beta 2 agonists such as salbutamol (to treat asthma).
• Corticosteroids.
• Other medicines used to treat diabetes.
