Metformin hydrochloride is used to treat type 2 diabetes (also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes) when diet and exercise alone are not enough to control blood sugar levels.
It is used in patients who are overweight.
If you are allergic to metformin hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.
If you have liver problems.
If you have severe kidney failure.
If you have uncontrolled diabetes, such as very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid weight loss.
If you have a severe infection, such as inflammation affecting the lungs, airways, or kidneys.
If you are being treated for severe heart failure, have recently had a heart attack, have serious circulation problems, or have breathing difficulties.
If you drink a lot of alcohol.
Risk of lactic acidosis:
Metformin hydrochloride may cause very rare but very serious side effects called lactic acidosis, especially if the kidneys are not working properly, or if you have uncontrolled diabetes, serious infections, liver problems, or dehydration.
Stop taking metformin hydrochloride and contact your doctor or the nearest hospital immediately if you experience any symptoms of lactic acidosis, as this condition can lead to coma.
