Metoclopramide increases contractions of the muscles in the upper digestive tract.
This leads to a faster rate of stomach emptying into the intestines.
Metoclopramide is taken orally (by mouth) for 4 to 12 weeks to treat heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux in people who have used other medications.
Treatment with this medication can cause tardive dyskinesia, a serious and often irreversible movement disorder.
The risk of developing tardive dyskinesia increases with the duration of treatment and the total cumulative dose.
This medication should be discontinued in patients who show signs or symptoms of tardive dyskinesia.
There is no known treatment for tardive dyskinesia.
In some patients, symptoms may lessen or disappear after stopping treatment.
Treatment with this medication should be avoided for more than 12 weeks in all cases except rare situations where the therapeutic benefit is believed to outweigh the risk of developing tardive dyskinesia.
