Bromfenac sodium is a typical anti-inflammatory agent.
Its mechanism of action is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase 1 and 2. Prostaglandins have been shown in several animal models to be a mediator of certain types of intraocular inflammation. In animal eye studies, prostaglandins have been shown to cause disruption of the blood-aqueous humor barrier, vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, leukocytosis, and increased intraocular pressure.
